Ardkeen Quality Food Store
Ardkeen Quality Food Store is an independent food retailer, locally owned and managed. The business was founded by Robert and Pamela Jephson way back in 1967 as a small grocery store with petrol pumps out the front. Believe it or not this was quite a novel format back then! The business has grown in popularity and scale over the years, notably when a major redevelopment of Ardkeen Shopping Centre took place in 1998.
Now operated by the next generation of the family, Ardkeen Quality Food Store has worked to develop a unique offering, focused on quality. The store now claims to stock the largest range of Irish food in the country with a huge array of artisan and craft producers as well as more mainstream brands. As food quality and provenance grows in importance for consumers, Ardkeen is well placed to take advantage of this trend. Director Colin Jephson says it’s a question of trust: “Our customers want to know where their food comes from and how it was produced. We can help them with that as we know most of these producers personally.”
There is a full off-licence within the shop and Wine Buyer Carmel Carroll has assembled a stunning and ever-changing range of classic and modern wines offering consistent quality and value. Her enthusiasm and immense knowledge is appreciated by customers and of course staff are trained to retail alcohol in a responsible manner. Alcohol is not like groceries, it requires a special duty of care.
Although there have been many changes over the years the philosophy remains the same; to provide great value by offering better quality products and excellent customer service. Unfortunately recent excessive increases on alcohol excise tax puts considerable and unfair pressure on this part of the business.
