My earliest career was in the hotel and entertainment industry as a barman and later as a manager in well-known Dublin night spots including the Tudor Rooms and Barry's Hotel. After a brief hiatus, the prospect of running my own off-licence appealed to me so I decided to give it a go. Things have changed dramatically over the last thirty years. If you don't know your stuff now, they won't come to you because today you are dealing with a highly educated consumer. So I applied myself to find out as much as I could about the business, particularly wine sales.
By staying in touch with suppliers and getting to know other operators in the trade I got to know some of my closest friends. “The best friends that I have - and friends that I have for life - are friends that I met through the business. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet so many people - both in and out of the trade.
But the greatest attraction for me is being able to use my knowledge about the trade to help my customers. Its the buzz. The satisfaction of having a customer come back and compliment you on your selection of whatever you sold them.That is the reward for the hard work!
